Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Thursday 02.01.2020

Rain and high day temperatures may result in natural avalanche activity. Fresh vind slabs are expected in the highest areas.

Avalanche problems

Wet snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Water pooling in/above snow layers

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on a few steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Tysdag har det kome noko nysnø heilt ned til havnivå. Det underliggande snødekket er gjennomfukta opp til omlag 500 moh. I dei aller høgaste fjellområda kan ein finne fokksnøansamlingar. Det lite snø igjen under 300 moh.

Det vert observert moderat snøfokk og enkelte drønn i fersk fokksnø i indre strøk av regionen tysdag.

20 mm precipitation, up to 37 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from southeast, changing to moderate gale from the southwest during the afternoon. -5 °C to 3 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Thursday 2. January 2020

18 mm precipitation, up to 45 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from south, changing to gale from the southwest during renoon. -1 °C to 6 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Avalanche risk assessment

Temperaturauke og nedbør i form av regn i låglandet vil føre til at det kan gå naturleg utløyste skred der det ligg snø frå før. Mest utsatt er det høgdenivået som fekk snø onsdag for så å få regn på snødekket torsdag. På dei aller høgaste toppane vil det kunne danne seg store fokksnøflak i leområder, men stort sett er det forventa at det regnar til topps. Skredfaren er høgast i indre delar av regionen der det er høgast fjell og det kjem mest snø.
